Not all hand lettering is created with pen and ink. Take, for example, my "paper alphabet", made of tiny scrap paper rolls arranged into letterforms (below). Does enjoying this kind of work make me slightly fanatical? Maybe, but I prefer to think of it as "detail-oriented."
